Why does my cat meow at night?
Night meowing almost always has a reason, and the reason is rarely stubbornness. Cats are most active around dawn and dusk, they sleep a lot during the day when nobody is home, and a bowl that ran empty at eleven feels urgent at four. Older cats add their own reasons. Here is how to find yours and what actually helps.
Check the health side first
Loud, insistent night calling that is new deserves a vet visit before any training. An overactive thyroid, high blood pressure, pain, failing kidneys and sight or hearing loss all make cats vocal at night, and they are common in cats over ten. Cognitive decline in older cats often shows up as calling into an empty room. None of that gets better with a closed door.
Hunger and the empty bowl
Cats hunt and eat many small meals a day. One large dinner at seven leaves a long, empty night. A small portion right before your bedtime, an automatic feeder set for the early hours, or splitting the daily ration into four or five servings solves a surprising number of noisy nights.
Boredom and a day spent sleeping
A cat that sleeps from nine to six because the flat is quiet is wide awake at two. The fix happens during the day, not at night: a proper play session in the evening, hunting games that end with a catch and a meal, a window seat, and food puzzles instead of a full bowl.
Loneliness and asking for company
Many cats call because the calling worked once. Getting up, talking, feeding or even scolding all count as attention. If your cat is healthy and fed, the quiet answer is no answer: no light, no voice, no door. It usually gets worse for a few nights before it gets better, which is the part most people give up on.
What to do this week
- Book a vet check if the meowing is new, sounds different or comes with weight loss, more thirst or confusion.
- Move the biggest meal of the day to late evening and add a small snack right before bed.
- Play properly for ten to fifteen minutes in the evening, with a wand toy, until your cat is done, not until you are.
- Leave out food puzzles and a few hidden treats so the night has something to do.
- Keep the bedroom door consistent: either always open or always closed, because a door that sometimes opens is worth calling at.
- Do not reward the call with light, voice or food, and do not punish it either. Both teach your cat that calling gets a reaction.
When it is a kitten or a new cat
The first nights in a new home are loud for almost every cat, and that is not a training problem. A warm bed near your room, a worn shirt that smells of you, a small meal late and a lot of play during the day usually settle it inside two weeks. Kittens grow out of the dawn sprint as they mature.
What does not help
Water sprays, shouting and shutting the cat away make cats more anxious, and an anxious cat is louder, not quieter. Locking a cat out of the bedroom without changing anything else usually moves the noise to the other side of the door.
